Our Aims and Objectives

There are many examples of Pythagorean teachings being ahead of its time. Already the Pythagoreans of the 5th Century BC described the earth as a sphere, circulating a centra! fire. Also their conception of the basic constitution of the Universe as based upon pairs of opposites is in accordance with modern polarity teaching. Time and again, philosophy and science have demonstrated the actuality of Pythagorean ideas.

This progressive way of thinking is preserved in the Pythagoreanism of today. The implications for our modern view on humanity are as follows: Humanity is entrusted with spirit and reason. To bind this gift in rigid dogma is contrary to its nature. Whatever belief system you might choose to adhere to, it should never be allowed to limit the freedom of your thoughts.

Thinking beings have always been on a quest to find their place in Nature and understand the purpose of their presence. They could only apprehend part of this totality as its senses are bound to the phenomena of the visible world. But it also felt that it was entrusted with an 'antenna" that enabled perception beyond the external phenomena. It has always been a goal for the seeker to "tune" this antenna into a use and reception that is as accurate as possible. Our Order follows a path towards the transcendental experience that corresponds to our western mentality.

Apart from doctrines on the immortality of the human soul and reincarnation, teachings regarding harmony have great importance in the Pythagorean tradition. 2500 years ago, the Pythagoreans founded the following doctrine: "The Cosmos is Harmony and Number". Within modem science, this is as valid as ever. However, the numbers do not only express quantities; they also have qualities, as can be experienced in the domain of music. The Hermetic scriptures contain a lot about humanity and creation that is worthwhile considering. These and other wisdom teachings are only regarded as inspirations for your own thoughts, never as dogma.

There is no dogma, no binding belief system or moral doctrine, as our experience shows that the human being can find within himself or herself the powers and forces that lead to an holistic outlook and an ethical attitude towards life. From such a position, it is possible to enter a connection with the spiritual world. Pythagoras and his followers always treated men and women as equal whilst honouring their differences. Those who walk the path of our Order, find that it can help them to live a life with a respectful attention towards creation with all its creatures, in harmony with themselves and the surroundings; and also to discern with independent thought at the same time as one respects the thoughts of others. Thus, a contribution is made towards peace between human beings.
